Your homework assignment is to study your debate topic and come to class with notes to share with your team. When you come to class, I will take a look at your notes to ensure you came prepared to be a productive member of your team. If you are a judge, then bring some notes on both topics. No matter what team you are on, there is too much information for you to get it all and come to class with everything. But, that is not an excuse for being slothful, either. Bring information enough information that you can be a productive member of your team.
Here are some tips:
Make sure you understand the resolution; you need to understand the topic before you can prepare to make your arguments. Make sure you understand the position your team has been assigned to argue. And make sure you understand what the other team has been assigned to argue.
Identify the arguments in favor of your position. Which arguments do you think are the strongest? Choose the arguments you want to use as the focus of your position. Identify reliable sources to support in your arguments.
Identify the arguments in favor of the other team’s position. Be prepared to counter their arguments. Consider how the other team may counter your arguments.
Here are a few resources that may be helpful. But, you may want to find other resources, too. There is a tremendous amount of information available on your debate topic.
